New Bit Penn - 11/18/00

This isn't really a story, so much as information. Last night we decided to put in a new bit. We've been working on it for a while (the "juggling" part of it I've been working on for over 20 years. We're calling it "Wizard" for the setlist, and I wear a pink glittery juggler's vest and Teller gets to wear a wizard's hat. He may only be wearing a wizard's hat because of Lou Reed. I had the line, "I was talking to Chuck in his Genghis Kahn suit and his wizard's hat" stuck in my head. I bet that's just why it's called "Wizard." If not for that, we'd probably call it "Magic Hat." The crew did amazing work on this. Nate, Burt, Robbie, and Stuart really got this together fast.

Penn & Teller working on their new bit It's a high-pressure trick for me, and I was really worried. It was all that I had in my mind for the whole show. It's a lot of hard talking and a lot of really hard skill stuff for me. It's a card trick, and a really good one. I can't imagine anyone will figure it out. There are parts of it that should be as head-scratching as Bullet.

Well, it went well. No one was hurt. The trick worked. I think we fooled everyone. There were a few laughs. I have to get more jokes and I have to get the arch together. The bit has some tension between us written in, and I wasn't really playing that. But, for the first time, it was great. I'm avoiding saying too much, because some of you will want to see it fresh. It'll go into the lineup in SF next week, and then Seattle. For the first time through, it was great.
