New P&T Bits Penn - 3/16/07

Well, with ID in the can and the radio show over, I have more time. I went out for a nice trike ride with Goudeau today. We haven’t done that in a while. It’s like the radio show but just for the two of us, and there’s exercise and fresh air involved.

It counter-intuitive, but taking time to do other projects, really seems to kick me in the ass for ideas for P&T. It really feels good to come back and do stuff live. I love working live, and I come back from ID, and I’m a better live performer. We’ve got a few new bits in the pipe that should be in soon. There’s a lot of stuff that’s more out there than we’ve ever done. Really trippy and non-linear and I like that. Last night we put in a cute little 3 minutes that is just a magic trick with no twists and no real intellectual content, but just a great trick. I might not have liked that a few years ago, but I like it now. I think a lot of that is the radio show and ID. It makes me appreciate stuff about performing live that I used to take for granted. The new bit has no talk and Jonesy music and I like that a lot. For the first time through it was great. When it gets smooth, I think it’ll kill, but it’ll kill as a polished magic trick and I like that. It’s really fun to put new stuff in. It looks like we’ll have about 25 minutes of new stuff in the show by summer. Some is more experimental and people might not like it, but that’s cool too. We just take it out.

We’re having great crowds, and I’m doing a ton of press for ID and that turns into press for BS, and that’ll give us even bigger crowds, and that is our job. Our job is selling tickets to our show. I like that job.

Oh, in case you don’t get to the show, the new bit that’s in now is a Newspaper tear. Just like Doug Henning did years ago. But, it’s a trick I always liked and our version seems like a real fooler. Johnny and Close did great work with us. They did a great job of putting it together with us. We started out with an idea that I had that was pretty contrived and precious, and we came down to just the trick, and just the trick seems right for the show. You know, it’s fun to do magic.
