In Awe Of The Zone Penn - 9/13/02

Last night my favorite juggling team, Owen and Jon, The Passing Zone, came over to the house. I had talked with them about the bit I wanted to do where I played the bass and then balanced it on my chin. They had helped a bit in Email. They told me it was possible and how to practice. I hurt my arm a little and had to take some time off from practicing, but until then, I had been practicing a lot and moving ahead slowly.

I asked them about the bass. In the dark, with no warm-up, Owen, flipped the bass upside-down, moved the bass to his chin and balanced it perfectly. The good news is I had proof of concept, the bad news is, well, I can't do it. But, now I've seen it done, and that's always a help. Jon balanced it right side up and that was a big help because I saw that I didn't like how that looked, and that saves me a lot of practice.

Man, they're good. Seeing Owen and Jon do something is only marginally inspiring because they're so good. It's like hearing Ray Brown play the bass, you don't say, "Hey, he can do that, so I'm sure I can." But, I'm good at practicing and now I know it's possible.

When my arm is all better, I'll get back to work.
