So Close to Brilliant Penn - 8/12/01

The shows have been going wonderfully at the Rio. We're having very good crowds, it's a beautiful theater, and it's a great show. It's a comfortable set up, and we're adding lots of new stuff and polishing things. It's pretty great. Honor System is new and is playing well, while staying pretty out. It's a very strange bit and we're letting it be WAY too strange for Vegas. I love that more than anything. Wizard is getting so tight and the structure is so strong and it's a warhorse already, and we're getting ready to put in "Girl to Gorilla." We're illin' and chillin' like little Bobby Dylan.

Okay, now the bad news. Last night, the last audience member didn't speak English and was very stupid (those always go together like India and dysentery). "Cut the cards, and put the top section on my hand." Oh well, that was impossible even though he'd seen others do it twice before. He did a running cut and shuffled and then when I picked up cards he added more and then took away some. Hmmm. He then wrote on the paper "98". I think because he thought I told him to write 9 and then 8. He then put a line and wrote "8" under it. Well, Jamy and Teller understand a little bit of what was going on at this point, and while that was going on, I made a make that he wanted me to do division. I put 8 into "98", "Okay, that's 1, carry the 1, that's 2, that's 12 point . . ." I was working hard while I was doing it. I mean I was really working. Man, I was so close to pulling it out of the fire.

I came so close to saving it. I mean, so close to genius. So close to super-pro. Man, just knocking on the best that's ever been.

But, I failed. Miserably. The World's Stupidest Sober Atheist rides again.
