2006 Penn - 1/6/07

Here is my year end for 2006

Movies

I saw 19 movies in the theater this year, 5 more than last year.

My favorites (in the order I saw them):

Slither
Lucky Number Sleven
Lady of the Water
Scoop
Little Miss Sunshine
Crank
The Departed (as a goofy comedy)
Infamous
Casino Royale

I put video, broadcast, DVD, and TiVo, together.

I saw 61 video things (20 fewer than last and whole season of 24 only counted as one, and the TiVo TV shows don’t count at all – it has to be a movie if it’s on TV. )

EZ and I like to watch a little something on TV after I get home from the show. It’s not really watching stuff because it’s good, it’s just an excuse to be together and talk. It’s more like watching the fireplace for us. That’s most of “Law & Order,” “House,” stuff like that. It serves a very specific purpose for us.

Here’s the ones I liked in the order I saw them:

Clay Pigeons
The Root of All Evil, 1&2, Richard Dawkins
The Staircase
Die Harder
Iconoclasts, Bill Russell and Samuel L. Jackson
American Carny, featuring Todd Robbins
F for Fake
A Few Good Men
Million Dollar Baby
The Watcher
Jaws
The Human Behavior Experiments
Match Point
Le Petomane: Parti avec le vent
Total Recall
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Inside Man
Ararat
Devil’s Rejects
Boondock Saints
Final Destination 3
Tiny Tim: The Last Hurrah
The Johnny Carson Show, Wednesday, Dec 17, 1969 – Tiny Tim’s Wedding
Mr. Conservative, Goldwater on Goldwater
The Notorious Betty Page
Popendippity and “The Cake” on The Smothers Brothers Show
House – Season 2
The Girl in the Café (the acting and the movie, not the crazy politics)
Rock and Roll High School
24 – Season 5
Ironside – Pilot (Tiny Tim and Raymond Burr together – heaven!)

I saw 8 bands (5 more than last year – a show every night, don’t you know) and my favorites were:

Zappa Plays Zappa
Les Paul and his Trio
Company (bad ideas, but nice band staging, like Sweeney Todd)

I saw 1 comedy show in 2006 (3 fewer than last year) and my favorites:

Provenz

I saw no magic shows in 2006

I saw 4 plays (1 fewer than last year). Here’s the ones I liked in the order I saw them.

The Coast of Utopia, Voyage

I saw 17 Vegas shows in 2006 (6 more than last year), my favorites were:

Porno Show (AVN)
Provenz
Ellen Johnson on Madelyn Murray O’Hare
Clown Convention
Martin Mull: A View Through Time (art)
Ansel Adams: America
Vegas San Gennaro Festival
Greek Festival
Fetish and Fantasy Ball

My book list is less complete, I read about 14 books this year and liked most of them. That’s 4 fewer than last year – way not enough. Time time time. Of course that doesn’t include Moby Dick, which I’m always reading and listening to in the car and “The Road to En-Dor” that I read to write the screenplay with Neil.

Parasite Rex – Carl Zimmer
Invisible Monsters – Chuck Palahniuk
Air Guitar, Essay’s on Art & Democracy – Dave Hickey
Atlas Shrugged – Ayn Rand
The Man Who Fed the World – Leon Hesser
Melville, His World and Work – Andrew Delbanco
Fight Club – Chuck Palahniuk
The God Delusion – Richard Dawkins
Tiny Tim – Harry Stein
Twenty Days with Julian & Little Bunny by Papa – Nathaniel Hawthorne
Brokeback Mountain – Annie Proulx (made me KNOW I didn’t want to see the movie)
Saturday – Ian McEwan
Never Have Your Dog Stuffed and Other Things I’ve Learned – Alan Alda
On Bullshit – Harry G. Frankfurt

Music

Because I get 10 or more CDs a week, I don't keep track of music.

But, I do have to say that Tiny Tim, Sun Ra, Ray Brown, OK GO, and right under the wire, Slim Gaillard have made me nuts this year. I just love them.

And Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour is the greatest radio show ever done and that's not saying enough good.
